Terms of Service

These terms are the agreement between you and StudyLess for using the StudyLess apps for iOS and Android, the web app at app.studyless.app, and this website (together, the "Service"). StudyLess is operated by Mingeon Kim, an individual based in Seoul, Republic of Korea ("StudyLess", "we", "us").

By creating an account or using the Service you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data; read it too.

We have tried to write these terms plainly. Where a section restates something the law already gives you, the law wins; nothing here takes away rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived.

1. Words we use

  • "Your Content" is what you put into StudyLess: the photos, PDFs, text and audio you add (including lecture recordings), the cards you write or edit, deck and folder names, exam dates, your questions to the deck chat and to Ask AI, the changes you ask for when your notes are rewritten, mock-exam answers, and feedback you send us.
  • "Generated Content" is what the AI features produce for you from Your Content: notes and their rewrites, flashcards, chat answers and the changes the chat suggests, source summaries, transcripts of your recordings, mock-exam questions, grades and feedback, podcast episodes, narrations and visual overviews.
  • "AI provider" is the company whose models we use to produce Generated Content. Today that is OpenAI, L.L.C. (United States). The Privacy Policy says exactly what is sent and how it is kept. If we change provider, we update the Privacy Policy before the change.
  • "Account" is the StudyLess account you create with Apple, Google or an email address.

2. Who can use StudyLess

You must be at least 13 years old. If the law where you live sets a higher age for agreeing to terms like these, or for having your data processed without a parent's consent, you must be that age instead — for example, 14 in South Korea, and up to 16 in some EU countries. StudyLess has no way to collect a parent's consent, so it cannot be used below those ages.

If you are a minor where you live, use StudyLess with your parent's or guardian's knowledge. They may contact us about your account on your behalf.

If we learn that an account belongs to someone below the applicable age, we will delete it and its data.

3. Your account

  • You can create an account with Sign in with Apple, Sign in with Google, or an email address and password. Keep your sign-in details to yourself; you are responsible for what happens under your account until you tell us it has been compromised.
  • Give us accurate information and keep your email address current, because it is how we reach you and how you recover access.
  • One person per account. Do not use someone else's account or let someone else use yours.
  • Earlier versions of StudyLess let you start as a guest without an email. If you still have a guest account, add an email or provider sign-in to keep it: a guest account cannot be recovered after signing out or uninstalling, and we cannot restore it for you.

4. What the Service does

StudyLess helps you remember what you learn. Today it lets you:

  • make a deck from photos, PDFs or pasted text (or, on Pro, a lecture recording) and get notes and flashcards written from it by AI;
  • read the notes, ask the deck's chat about your material, and have the notes rewritten;
  • edit or delete the cards, or write cards yourself;
  • review cards with spaced repetition, rating each one Again, Hard, Good or Easy, and see what is due today;
  • add an optional exam date to a deck, or to a folder of decks, so the schedule adapts to it, and keep reviewing afterwards;
  • take AI-written mock exams on a deck and get automated grading;
  • on Pro, make podcast episodes and a visual overview of your notes;
  • send a classmate a copy of a deck;
  • get a daily reminder on your phone if you turn one on;
  • use the same library on your phone, tablet and the web, and export it at any time.

Price. StudyLess has a free plan and a paid plan, StudyLess Pro. The free plan is free for as long as you like, with no advertisements. Pro is an auto-renewing subscription, weekly, monthly or yearly, bought through the App Store, Google Play or our web checkout, where our reseller Paddle.com is the merchant of record for the order; the price, the period, any free trial and any introductory price for a first period (with the price that follows it) are shown before you confirm, in your store's currency. A subscription renews until you cancel it in your store account (or the web checkout's management page) at least 24 hours before the current period ends; a free trial converts to a paid subscription at its end unless you cancel first. Refunds are handled by the store you bought from under its rules. Nothing you already have is taken away when a subscription ends: your cards, reviews and exports stay, and the free plan's allowances apply. A parent or guardian can pay for your Pro on the web through a link you send them from the plan page: Pro goes to your account, and the person who pays is the web checkout's customer for that subscription (its receipts and cancellation are theirs as well as yours).

Allowances. Because AI features cost us money per use, each plan has allowances. The free plan makes one new deck (its notes and its cards) and one mock exam a calendar month and answers five chat questions a day; the Pro tools (podcasts, visual overviews, lecture recording) are part of Pro. Pro is unlimited for your own studying, within fair-use limits that stop abuse rather than ordinary use: up to 20 new decks, 10 notes rewrites, 10 mock exams and 200 chat questions a day, and 3 each of podcast episodes, visual overviews and lecture recordings a day; and 40 podcast episodes, 30 visual overviews and 20 hours of lecture recording a month, each recording up to 3 hours. Every account also has an hourly limit on requests. During a free trial, and while Pro comes from an invite or a promotion rather than a paid subscription, the fair-use limits are about half: up to 10 new decks, 5 notes rewrites, 5 mock exams and 100 chat questions a day, and 2 podcast episodes, 1 visual overview and 1 lecture recording a day; and 20 podcast episodes, 15 visual overviews and 10 hours of lecture recording a month, each recording up to 90 minutes. The plan page states them too; the app shows what is left and tells you when you reach one, and they reset on their own. Studying what you have already made — reviews, your decks, notes and cards, export — is never limited. We may change the allowances to keep the Service sustainable, and we will announce any change to what a plan includes before it applies to a subscription you already pay for.

Changes. We add, change and sometimes remove features. If we remove something that holds your data, we will say so in advance where we reasonably can, so that you can export your data first (Section 7 says what the export contains).

5. Rules for using StudyLess

Use the Service for your own learning and stay within the law. Specifically, do not:

  • add material you do not have the right to use for your own study, or use StudyLess to copy and distribute someone else's work (a scan of your own textbook for your own review is what the product is for; republishing a textbook is not);
  • add other people's personal information — classmates' details, medical or financial information, ID or card numbers — or material that is illegal, abusive, hateful or sexual;
  • use the AI features to try to produce harmful, deceptive or abusive content, or feed them instructions meant to make them misbehave;
  • sell, rent or offer the Service or its Generated Content as your own product or service;
  • use bots, scripts or scraping to access the Service, share accounts to get around allowances, or otherwise circumvent limits and security measures;
  • reverse engineer or copy the apps or our systems beyond what the law allows;
  • interfere with the Service or with other students' use of it.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these rules, and we may do it without warning if the risk to other people or to the Service requires it. Where we can, we will tell you why and let you export your data first.

6. Your Content and Generated Content

6.1 Your Content stays yours

You own what you add. So that we can run the Service, you give us permission to store, copy, process, display and transmit Your Content for that purpose only — including sending it to our AI provider to produce Generated Content, syncing it between your devices, and keeping backups. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account, except for backups that expire on their own and copies we must keep by law.

We do not use Your Content to train AI models, to advertise, or for anything other than running and fixing the Service. We do not look at your material except when you send it to us in a support request or when we need to investigate abuse or a technical problem.

You promise that you have the rights needed to add Your Content and that adding it does not break the law or someone else's rights.

6.2 Generated Content

  • Generated Content is produced by AI models from Your Content. It can be wrong, incomplete or out of context, and different students can receive similar output from similar material. Check it against your source, especially before an exam. A mock-exam grade describes that attempt; it is not a prediction of a real exam result.
  • To the extent we hold any rights in Generated Content made for your account, you may use it freely for your own learning: keep it, edit it, export it, and share it with classmates who are studying the same thing. You may not sell it or bundle it into a product or service.
  • You are responsible for how you use Generated Content. It is not professional, medical, legal or academic advice.

6.3 Feedback

If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them to improve StudyLess without owing you anything. We will not use your name unless you say we can.

7. Export and deletion

  • Export. Settings → Data & privacy → Export my data gives you one JSON file with the text of what you have made and done: decks, cards, notes, folders, your sources' extracted text, source summaries, review history, mock exams, deck chats, study counters, and the scripts and transcripts of your podcast episodes and recordings. It does not contain audio, pictures or the files you uploaded; the Privacy Policy lists what it leaves out.
  • Deleting decks and cards. You can delete them at any time; they are removed from our servers first and then from your devices.
  • Deleting your account. Settings → Delete account, then type the confirmation word the screen shows (DELETE in English). Deletion runs immediately and removes your account, your material and files, your notes, cards, deck chats, podcast episodes and visual overviews, your review history and your mock exams from our systems; if you signed in with Apple and we hold an Apple token for your account, we also ask Apple to disconnect your Apple ID. It cannot be undone. Backups expire within 30 days, and a few provider-side records expire on their own schedules; the Privacy Policy lists them. Deleting your account does not cancel a Pro subscription: cancel it first in your Apple ID or Google Play subscriptions, or in Settings → Pro & billing on the web.

You can also ask us to delete your account by email from the address on the account, as described on the account deletion page.

8. Automated scheduling and grading

StudyLess decides when to show you each card with a spaced-repetition algorithm (FSRS) that learns from your ratings, and adapts that schedule to an exam date when you set one. Mock exams are written and graded by AI. These are automated decisions, but they only affect the order and timing of your flashcards and the feedback on a practice attempt; they have no legal or similarly significant effect on you.

You decide how to study, what to trust, and when to stop. StudyLess shows what is due and what you have done; it does not tell you that you are ready for an exam, and you should not read any number in the app as a promise about a grade.

9. Other companies' services and the app stores

Sign in with Apple and Sign in with Google are provided by Apple and Google under their own terms. The App Store and Google Play deliver the apps under their terms. Our Discord community is run on Discord under Discord's rules. We are not responsible for those services.

If you downloaded StudyLess from Apple's App Store, the following also applies, as Apple requires:

  • These terms are between you and StudyLess, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content and has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it.
  • Your licence to the app is limited to Apple-branded devices you own or control, and is otherwise governed by the App Store's Licensed Application End User License Agreement usage rules.
  • If the app fails to conform to a warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app (there is none) or of a subscription bought through the App Store, as Apple's rules provide; to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation, and any other claim, loss or cost is our responsibility, not Apple's.
  • We, not Apple, handle any claim relating to the app, including product liability, legal or regulatory compliance, and consumer protection claims, and any claim that the app infringes someone's intellectual property.
  • You confirm that you are not in a country under a U.S. government embargo or designated as "terrorist supporting", and that you are not on a U.S. government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

10. Our rights in the Service

The apps, the web app, the website, our brand, and the way it all fits together belong to StudyLess or to the people who license them to us. You get a personal, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Service under these terms; you do not get ownership of any part of it. Open-source components inside the apps remain under their own licences.

"StudyLess" and our logo are our marks. Do not use them in a way that suggests we endorse something we do not.

11. Availability, suspension and ending

  • We work to keep StudyLess available, but it can be interrupted by maintenance, by our providers, or by problems we did not foresee. A daily reminder can arrive late or not at all; the schedule itself is unaffected.
  • We may suspend or restrict an account to protect other people, the Service or ourselves, or when the law requires it (Section 5).
  • You can stop using StudyLess whenever you like and delete your account (Section 7).
  • If we ever have to shut StudyLess down, we will give you at least 30 days' notice by email or in the app, and time to export your data.

12. What we do not promise

The Service, including Generated Content and the review schedule, is provided as is and as available. To the extent the law allows, we do not promise that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that Generated Content will be accurate or complete, or that you will achieve any particular learning result, grade or exam outcome. Learning depends on you; StudyLess is a tool.

Consumers in the EEA, the UK, South Korea and elsewhere: you keep every right your law gives you that cannot be excluded, including rights about services that do not work as described. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, for intent or gross negligence, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

13. Limits on our liability

Subject to Section 12, and to the extent the law allows: we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost profits, lost data that you could have exported, or losses that come from relying on Generated Content or on a review schedule; and our total liability to you for everything arising from the Service or these terms is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or USD 50.

Some jurisdictions do not allow some of these limits. Where that is the case, they apply only as far as the law permits.

14. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Korea. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in the courts of that country. Otherwise, the courts of Seoul, Republic of Korea, have jurisdiction.

Before anyone goes to court, please email support@studyless.app. Almost every problem with a study app can be fixed by fixing the app, and we would rather do that. We will respond within 14 days.

These terms do not require arbitration and do not waive your right to bring a claim in court or to join a claim with others.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the Service changes. We will post the new version here with its effective date and, for changes that affect your rights or obligations, tell you in the app or by email at least 7 days before they take effect — 30 days if the change is to your disadvantage. If you do not agree with a change, stop using the Service and delete your account before the effective date; using the Service after that date means the new terms apply.

16. Everything else

  • These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and StudyLess about the Service.
  • If a part of these terms is found invalid, the rest still applies.
  • If we do not enforce something right away, we can still enforce it later.
  • You cannot transfer your account or these terms to someone else. We may transfer them to a person or company that takes over running StudyLess; we will tell you if that happens, and the Privacy Policy will keep applying to your data.
  • These terms are written in English. If we publish a translation, the English version governs where the two differ, except where your local law requires otherwise.
